Sport England has funded and developed a suite of films to promote best practice use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium. The films have been developed and are supported by afPE, YST, CSPN, Compass, and sports coach UK and they have been created and produced by a production company called Somersault. They are filmed on location in primary schools and capture recent impact and delivery.

We believe that these films can be a powerful tool for you in engaging with primary schools and useful in raising the profile of the premium and best practice use.

The films have strong messages, powerful statistics and real examples which all primaries across England may benefit from watching. They are suitable for and targeted at; Headteachers, governors, school staff and coaches working in schools. The four films focus on the outcomes of the Primary PE and Sport Premium and include the following key messages:

Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity

  • A 'one size fits all' approach doesn't work
  • Wellbeing of pupils, both physical and emotional, is of vital importance

A tool for whole school improvement

  • PE and Sport can improve pupil outcomes across the whole curriculum
  • PE and sport develops skills that children need to be competent learners
  • Character is developed and defined by participation in PE and sport
  • PE and sport can positively influence school ethos

Increase the confidence and skills of all staff in teaching PE

  • PE and sport are different
  • PE is a statutory curriculum subject and teachers should have the confidence to deliver
  • Only teachers should deliver PE, but sports coaches can enhance this and also support professional learning of teachers and other staff

More children – more sports – more competition

  • There are a wide range of sports and activities available, many pupils will be engaged by less traditional sports and different formats
  • Coaches, other adults and even the pupils themselves can help broaden the range of sports and activities on offer
  • Every child has the right to take part in competition regardless of ability
